Also, the first Pronghorns of the trip.

Soon the peaks of Glacier National Park loomed overhead. I was also greeted by a cold front with low clouds and the chilliest temperatures of the trip so far.

Passed some fellow Plein Air painters on the road to the entry to the park. Having just left eighty degree temps at Evergreen, I was surprised at how heavily dress these folks were. Until I stepped out of VanGo. There is a cold stiff breeze blowing. I also realized they were using the car for a wind break. A move I will remember.

By mid-afternoon, I’m at the St. Mary’s Welcome Center. Predictably, all the near, drive up to, campsites are full. They give me directions to Cut Back Campground which is a “primitive” site with first come, first serve registration. By primitive, they mean limited bathroom facilities (i.e. outhouse or porta-john), sites with no electrical or water hook-ups. I’m cool with that. Just give me a spot to park the van and lay my head. To get there, requires a twenty-minute drive on a paved road then five miles on a gravel road. I ran to VanGo and drove.

It’s becoming obvious that campsites are like fishing holes. The harder to get to, the better the site (or fishing). I guess it’s just the case that most people aren’t going to make the extra effort to go that extra mile that it takes to get beyond the easy road. Especially if you’re driving thirty-five foot of RV. Five miles of rough, pot holed, dirt road was worth the extra effort.
